Workshop 8 - site visit to Skanska construction site

Our final Shape My City session took a slightly different twist with the group venturing away from the architecture centre gallery to visit a Skanska construction site based nearby on Queen Square. The aim of this session was to give the young city shapers an insight into the construction side of the built environment sector, to compliment the knowledge they have gained from previous sessions on design and placemaking. When we arrived at 66 Queen Square we were greeted from behind the hoarding by Ben Yates and Simon Dawson, construction managers for Skanska. Simon and Ben showed us through to the site office where the group started by brainstorming their stereotypes of ‘building sites’. These included wolf whistles and a very male dominated working environment. Exploring landscape architecture: a healthy and playful Bristol harbourside

For the third Shape My City workshop of 2015 (11 June), the group welcomed Catherine Haigh, a Landscape Architect who works for HAB (Happiness Architecture Beauty). HAB believe in better quality housing and environments, respecting the local context and biodiversity of a space and making sure the sites are supportive of the people who live there and always take into account the history, character, community and landscape. Before Catherine told the group all about her exciting practice, the group got stuck in to the Spaceshaper warm up activity. They were split into small teams and given a range of postcards with different outdoor spaces on (including playgrounds, parks, community gardens and even the familiar Millennium Square) and had to decide whether they thought the spaces were good, bad or mediocre and discuss why. Sustainable architecture: snug homes

This blog post was written by the Architecture Centre’s Creative Intern, Lottie Morris On the 22 nd October the Shape My City group met for their fifth session. This month’s focus was on sustainable architecture and the group welcomed Shankari Raj-Edgar, architect, founder of Nudge Group , tutor at UWE and Cardiff University, consultant and researcher. To warm up, the group did a short activity - the task was to think about insulation and buildings and sort different cards into the ‘best’ – lots of insulation and ‘worst’ – very little insulation. The group thought straw bales, earth ships and cob houses belonged on the good side, whilst portacabins, made of chipboard, 1980s houses and Victorian houses went on the bad side, hence why some people retrofit their homes to become more sustainable.
